This thesis discusses the philosophical frame that underlies the author's Placidity of Mind 明鏡止水 series paintings. As the Placidity of Mind series borders on the realm of super-realism, this thesis will also provide an art historic account of how objects in nature are represented in super-realism paintings, followed by a discussion regarding the related process of cognitive perception. It is noted that the Placidity of Mind series is an attempt to reflect on the idea of "mind" as conceived in Oriental philosophy and, in particular, on the cognitive faculty of mind as expounded in the theory of mind 心學of Yi Hwang, a Korean neo-Confucian scholar of the sixteenth century. Accordingly the focus will be placed on the analysis of the mind's cognitive process and the perceptive representation of objects. Then it will be shown that self-reflection constitutes the key theme of the Placidity of Mind series.
